{"id":6455,"date":"2010-12-30T00:00:41","date_gmt":"2010-12-29T15:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sulki-min.com\/wp\/?p=6455"},"modified":"2024-12-01T10:49:29","modified_gmt":"2024-12-01T01:49:29","slug":"precepts-of-the-literalist-movement-are-you-sure-your-hair-is-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sulki-min.com\/wp\/precepts-of-the-literalist-movement-are-you-sure-your-hair-is-right\/","title":{"rendered":"\u300cPrecepts of the Literalist Movement: Are You Sure Your Hair Is Right?\u300d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1990, the English designer and maker Norman Potter published what would become a major document of his life and work, <em>Models &amp; Constructs<\/em>. <i>Precepts of the Literalist Movement<\/i> is a manifesto included in the book, although it must be dated much earlier, probably from his Corsham workshop days in the 1950s. The twenty-plus-one (zero) precepts, from \u201cStart always at zero\u201d to \u201cencounter!,\u201d have thoroughly affected the way we see design. Not that we have tried very hard to meet the imperatives, but we would embrace them as a guiding spirit when we have to make judgments about what we do.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, Colin MacCabe published <em>Godard: Images, Sounds, Politics<\/em>, an analysis of the work of Jean-Luc Godard punctuated by a series of interviews with the filmmaker himself and wonderfully designed by Richard Hollis. In one of the interviews, \u00adGodard answers a question about the goal of his radical television work: \u201cI\u2019m not driving at anything but are you sure your hair is right?\u201d The function of a radical, \u201ccritical\u201d work is, as we understand, in questioning rather than \u201cdriving\u201d one at particular destinations.<\/p>\n<p>As the title implies, <i>Precepts of the Literalist Movement: Are You Sure Your Hair Is Right?<\/i> is a simple mash-up of the two statements.
