The Asia Culture Center Theater is an ambitious interdisciplinary performing arts center that opened in Gwangju in 2015. Even before the opening, a lot of things were happening as part of the preparatory program, and to keep the related materials consistent, they needed a temporary visual framework to be used before the overall identity system was devised.

We came up with a very simple system that could be applied to any design. We noticed that the pentagon was often evoked in their internal discussions as a metaphor for the Center’s five areas of activities including the Theatre, as well as the traditional five-direction color system. We used the pentagon as a grid to generate a pair of lines that cross each other at an angle of 36° and, incidentally, recall stage lighting. We defined simple rules to superimpose the lines on different materials including web pages and publications, and to make them always extend over the edges, like radiating rays.
