Ilmin Museum of Art Vitrine

Vitrine is a temporary exhibition space installed at a now-unused entrance to the museum building, which is celebrating its centennial this year. Vitrine’s graphic identity, positioned between the Ilmin Museum’s logos, reflects its status as a space carved from the building’s preexisting conditions. The typeface is based on naru-che – a style originally developed in Japan in the early 1970s and adapted for Korean as gulim-che, which became one of the most widely used typefaces in Korea before it was increasingly shunned in recent years. The custom typeface, a stencil version of naru-che, both acknowledges the building’s complex history and the temporary nature of Vitrine. The logo is repeated to form decorative lines or borders.
