La vie mode d'emploi
offset lithograph, sewn in sections and cased
144 x 216 mm, 744 pp
Each title of Munhakdongne’s Georges Perec series shows the same portrait of the author on the jacket, but the image is treated differently according to the themes of the content. On La vie mode d’emploi, a diagram of the “10 x 10 knight’s tour” chess movement used by Perec to describe the rooms of a Paris apartment building – and to structure the ninety-nine chapters of the book – is combined with a portrait of the author, which is rendered in numbers and letters. Inside, a “typographic translation” is attempted: the many different typographic voices used in the original are expressed by matching Korean typefaces.
