Grace Euna Kim’s 「The Beautiful Souls」, a site-specific performance staged outdoors on the haunting site of Haus der Statistik, Berlin, explores “symbolic violence and the body as a site of resistance in crisis.” Performed in an unpredictable way, it invited the audience to be aware of the “politics of perception and the violence of the encounter with the Other.”

The leaflet shows a photograph of the site taken in the daytime overlaid with the text filled with the same picture, which is reversed to the negative to give an impression of the night. The foreground and the background sometimes merge to render parts of the text hard to read, reflecting the performance’s blurred boundaries between fiction and reality. The two sides of the leaflet also make a mirror-like relationship, with parts of the text inverted and only readable on the other side.
