Front cover

Tadeusz Borowski’s 1967 book is a collection of stories the author wrote from his experiences as a political prisoner in various Nazi concentration camps between 1943 and 1945. The black square on the conceptual cover design is meant to symbolize the urgent existential questions on the gravity of life that the people who suffered in the concentration camps must have been forced to ask—but to which they couldn’t possibly find answers—against the sinister lightness of the gas.
