Thomas
Six participants and a fictitious persona ask a series of tenacious questions about art in this book. Thomas, whose identity is unknown except being portrayed as the one who “doubts and believes in art” here, invites contributors to ask questions and share his feeling of uncertainty. His questions for them and the readers – from “do techniques render the artist/audience passive?” to “where does art come from?” – are dispersed in the book and placed in the bottom margin. The gray tone that saturates the entire book implies a skepticism toward the black-and-white clarity. The gold leaf that substitutes any information on the cover alludes to Thomas’s religious reference (“the one who doubts and believes”) while provoking imagination about what might be found behind the surface.
