Until its closure in 2025, the Insa Art Space of the Arts Council Korea (Inmigong) served for twenty-five years as a hub for experimental research and practice. As designers of its graphic identity in 2007, we participated in the institution’s final exhibition.
The graphic identity that had been in continuous use to represent the space for eighteen years was now faced with the possibility of becoming a voice without a body, a representation without a represented. **** *** ***** ** *** **** ******* ***** Visual Identity Manual is a gesture to open up Inmigong’s identity and return it to the public so that any individual or group can use it. The work presents every page of the “Insa Art Space of the Arts Council Korea Visual Identity Manual,” a document we produced in 2007, with any words associated with the original owner – “Arts Council Korea,” “Insa Art Space,” or “Inmigong” – physically cut out. The empty holes left by the vanished subject become windows into the imaginary future.
